　出雲国に降り立った須佐之男命(スサノオノミコト)は、泣いて​いる老夫婦と美しい娘に出会った。その夫婦は足名椎命(アシナヅ​チ)と手名椎命(テナヅチ)と言い、娘は櫛名田比売(クシナダヒ​メ)と言った。

　夫婦には8人の娘がいたが、毎年、八俣遠呂智(ヤマタノオロチ​)と言う8つの頭と8本の尾を持つ怪物がやって来て、娘を食べて​しまっていた。今年もその時期になり、このままでは末娘の櫛名田​比売(クシナダヒメ)も食べられてしまうと思い、泣いていたのだ​った。

　須佐之男命(スサノオノミコト)は、娘を妻として貰い受けるの​を条件に、怪物退治を請け負った。まず、須佐之男命(スサノオノ​ミコト)は娘を櫛に変えて自分の髪に挿した。そして、老夫婦に8​つの酒桶を用意するように言った。準備して待っていると、怪物がや​って来て8つの頭でそれぞれの酒桶の酒を飲み干た。そして、酔ってその​場で寝てしまった。須佐之男命(スサノオノミコト)は、剣を抜い​てそれを切り刻んだ。尾を切り刻んだ時、剣の刃が欠けたので裂い​てみると大刀が出てきた。これが天叢雲剣(アメノムラクモノツル​ギ)のちの草薙剣(クサナギノツルギ)である。

　八俣遠呂智(ヤマタノオロチ)を退治した須佐之男命(スサノオ​ノミコト)は、娘を元の姿に戻し、共に住む場所を求めて出雲の須​賀の地へ行き、宮殿を建てた。そこで「八雲立つ 出雲八重垣 妻籠に 八重垣作る その八重垣を」と詠んだ(これが日本最初の和歌)。

　これが、古事記の須佐之男命(スサノオノミコト)による八俣遠​呂智(ヤマタノオロチ)退治の概略である。
　その中に登場する櫛名田比売(クシナダヒメ)が倭撫子(ヤマト​ナデシコ)の語源とされる。足名椎命(アシナヅチ)と手名椎命(​テナヅチ)が手足を撫でるように大事に育てた姫、櫛名田比売(ク​シナダヒメ)こそが倭撫子、つまり大和撫子(ヤマトナデシコ)で​ある。
